DISC

DISC is the name of the game, as Activision wants to start shuffling people around digitally. ASICS a company that most people know for making sports gear is collaborating with the Facebook folks at Meta and game studio m ss ng p eces to do something completely different: create a sport from scratch specifically designed for VR (virtual reality) and MR (mixed reality).

What’s DISC all about?

Picture a high-speed game in which you are competing as one of four players on each team, attempting to score points by throwing a disc into the end zone. It’s sort of ultimate frisbee meets a little bit of basketball, but you’re playing in an arena that you can see through your VR headset. We built the game to be accessible, such that it is simple for you try VR for the first time without any previous experience. Do not get it twisted though, mastering DISC will require skill and practice.

How do you play?

You will need a VR or MR headset and ASICS shoes modified for VR to play DISC. Those shoes have sensors inside, which monitor your movements, so when you make a run or jump in the virtual world it feels like you are actually doing that. Some popular VR devices in the market are apple vision pro and meta quest.

The Future of Sports?

ASICS has ambitions for the DISC to be something other than a mere game. Its the future of sports to them, the way to get people moving and engaged even when we cant be together in person. They’re also looking to democratize esports (competitive video gaming) with a sport that everyone can participate in, no matter what their physical standing may be.

Other Cool Games from the Same Studio

The studio behind DISC, m ss ng p eces, has made some other awesome VR games you might have heard of:

  • Echo Arena: Think of it like dodgeball in space, where you’re floating around trying to outmaneuver your opponents.
  • Echo VR: This is more like a social space in VR, where you can hang out with friends and explore different virtual worlds.
  • Blaston: If you like action, this is a fast-paced VR shooter game that will test your reflexes.

So, what’s next?

We will have to wait and see how DISC develops, but it’s definitely an exciting time for VR and sports fans because of the development collaborations. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll all be playing DISC in our living rooms.
